NEW YORK (ABC) - Starting this week, using your credit card could cost you more. Wisconsin is one of forty state where stores could charge you more for paying with plastic. Stores can now legally charge you as much as 4% more for using a credit card.

For instance, if you buy a $200 digital camera, you might be charged as much as $8 for using your card. Stores have always had to pay a fee to let you swipe but following a settlement with credit card companies, retailers can now pass the fee on to you.

Ten states have already barred retailers from charging the fee. However some big retailers have already said that they won't be passing on the surcharge to customers. Wal-Mart told ABC news, "We are not interested in surcharging customers in order to allow credit card companies to continue charging unfair fees." Home Depot also told ABC they won't pass on the fee.

The surcharge will vary from store to store but there's a way to know if your neighborhood store will make you pay more, by law it has to be posted in the store.

Experts suggest carrying a debit card or cash for back-up so you can avoid the new charge.
