WPS notifies state of office closures; one in Wausau

Posted:

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The state Department of Workforce Development says it has received notice from a health insurance company that it is closing six offices and eliminating hundreds of jobs, including 201 in Wausau.

The 451 layoffs at Wisconsin Physicians Service Health Insurance start March 29, the agency said.

Employees were told last summer the future of the company was in jeopardy after a $17 billion government contract was not renewed. The closures also affect offices in Madison and Monona.

Under state law, employers employing 50 or more people may be required to give 60 days notice before a layoff or closing. The notice triggers a state program that offers assistance to affected workers.
