Firefighters battled a blaze Monday morning on Wausau’s east side that forced a large family from their home.

“They have a large family, like this, I think it’s really, really difficult for them to get a place and stay, for kids to focus on school,” said Blong Yang, a relative.

Firefighters said seven people, including five children, were inside at the time. Everyone was sleeping.

They were alerted when the smoke detectors went off.

“Windows started cracking and breaking out, and then the flames came and once they hit the attic area it was… nothing left,” said David Dennis, a neighbor.

“The smoke detectors were all working throughout the house, and luckily, they all heard them in time to get out of the fire with no injuries,” said Lt. Jeremy Kopp of the Wausau Fire Department.

Wausau fire officials said the fire started around midnight. It was caused by problems with the fuse box. The home was destroyed.

“My sister and my brother-in-law and all the kids, they cry a lot, but however, we have a couple families here, so we just calm them down. So, hopefully, that will help them,” said Yang.

The Red Cross has offered to assist the large family looking fro somewhere to call home.

Yang said his relatives don’t have enough room to house the family, and he hopes insurance will help cover the cost of a temporary place until they find a new home
