WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) -
Two of the three members of a family killed in an early morning fire near Wisconsin Rapids were trying to escape the home before being overcome by smoke, an investigator said Thursday.
William Heiser Sr., 79, and his 38-year-old son William Jr. were found dead near a door, said Wood County Sheriff's Lt. Shawn Becker. Janet Heiser, 72, was found in the basement.
They died of carbon monoxide poisoning, according to the Wood County coroner.
Firefighters responded to the scene at about 2:30 a.m. and the house was already engulfed in flames.
Becker said the fire started in an attached garage but the cause remained under investigation Thursday. Foul play has been ruled out.
Because of damage to the home, investigators have been unable to determine whether the home had smoke detectors, Becker said.
