MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -
It was an early morning for Ken Neckar.
"I started at 4:30 this morning," he said.
Neckar is a maintenance worker at the Marshfield YMCA. It's
his job to make sure the sidewalks and parking lots are safe.
"Just took care of the snow out in the parking lot and on
the sidewalks and everything to make sure that our customers and members didn't
have any problem when they came," said Neckar.
It's an important job on a snow day. YMCA leaders said
they see an increase in children spending the day there.
"There is a lot of action going on in the building during
our snow days… we bring in extra staff on days like today just so the kids are
in an even more safe environment," said Amanda Blaskowski, YMCA youth and
family director.
Students said they enjoy having the day off, even if they
are spending it inside.
"We don't have school, and I like coming here to go in
the fit for life room and exercising," said Faith Blaskowski, a kindergartner
at Washington Elementary School in Marshfield.
"I would say it's more fun to be here than it is at
school," said Dylan Milam, a fourth grader at Washington Elementary School.
YMCA leaders said children enjoyed a fun filled day that
included swimming, basketball in the gym and a movie.
Neckar said that's why his early start was worth it.
"As they come in and out, they thank us for the sidewalks
being clean and salted… so, it feels good," said Neckar.
