Three donkeys in a Wausau garage

When Kelly Dehnel learned these donkeys were in trouble she knew she had to do something.

"We stepped in and decided to help them to a better life," Dehnel said.

Jersey and Ellie May were in Kentucky, pregnant, and up for auction. Their owner had to get rid of them. That meant they could be heading to slaughter.

"I wasn't expecting them to be in as bad of condition as they were," Dehnel explained. "I thought, when does a person make the decision to do something when an animal is starving."

The Dehnel family decided to bring them home to Wausau. Just a little while later, Milton Burro was born.

"He had a lot of odds stacked up against him," Dehnel said. "He's a fighter."

Now, one week after his birth, the family is calling him a miracle.

So where does the Dehnel's love for donkeys come from? Dehnel says it began with just one.

"That was the start, and now I have 23," Dehnel said as she laughed.

And even that isn't enough.

"They're like potato chips, you can't have just one."

The Dehnel's now have donkeys of all sizes. That's just another reason helping Jersey, Ellie May, and Milton Burro is so meaningful.

"Donkeys are such appreciative animals. They just really want to be loved and these guys deserve better, that's why we brought them."

But, the Dehnel's don't plan to keep the donkeys. They're trying to find homes for them. Someone has already agreed to adopt Ellie May. Now, the search is on for a home for Jersey and Milton Burro.

The Dehnel's hope they find someone soon. But for now, these three donkeys in a garage seem quite content.
