WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) -
A Wood County man is now facing new charges, after police say he tried to hire a hitman.
Gabriel Campos, 21, has been in jail since last September. He is accused of killing ex-girlfriend, Maisie McCullough, at his home in Marshfield. Campos pleaded not guilty to that charge back in November. But today in court, his attorney changed his plea to not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. Campos is expected to be examined by a doctor.
According to a criminal complaint filed this month, Campos tried to pay another inmate to kill the man his ex-girlfriend was dating. It goes on to say Campos told the other inmate that Campos cut his ex-girlfriend's throat because she was seeing another man.
Campos is being held on a $5 million cash bond for the original charge. He appeared in Wood County court this morning, where a $1 million bond was set for the second charge.
Investigators say Campos told the inmate, "I can do all my time a lot easier if I knew he was dead."
Newsline 9 tried to reach two defense attorneys listed for Campos. Neither of them was immediately available for comment.
A jury trial is set for June for the original charge. Campos is set to appear in court again later this month.
