Experiencing winter with sled dogs

The power of a team of sled dogs is a sight to behold.

But for women enrolled in the Becoming an Outdoors Woman program, driving a team of sled dogs is now an experience to remember.

"It was neat testing the brake because you really need it more than you think" participant Kathy Kludt of Germantown told Newsline 9.

Kludt was joined by 81 other women this past weekend with Becoming an Outdoors Woman, a program striving to acquaint more women with activities in the wilderness.

The organization has teamed up with the College of Natural Resources at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point since 1991.  Programs are offered at various times in the year focusing on different outdoor activities that align well with the season.

Learning to drive sled dog teams was one part of the three day program at the Treehaven Field Station in Tomahawk.  Additional learning segments included cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, fur bearer ecology, knife sharpening and firearm safety.

The next round of outdoor programs begin in May.  For a complete list of programs with information on cost, times and details follow this link: http://www.uwsp.edu/cnr-ap/bowWI/Pages/events.aspx
