Our Athlete of the Week hasn't made his plans for college yet. But for now, he's focused on winning a state title.
Joe Umlauf from Wausau West made history this past Saturday, becoming the school's the first four-time conference champion.
The senior won the 132-pound weight division by pinning his opponent three minutes into the match.
At Wausau West, Umlauf has captured titles at 103, 112 and 126 pound divisions. But he recalls starting to wrestle with his brothers at the very young age of four.
"I started wrestling competitively when I was five, really just a couple of tournaments here and there for like pee wee kids," Umlauf said. "But I really got serious probably around fifth and sixth grade when I decided that I really wanted to just dedicate my whole life about wrestling and trying to get to that next level and next step."
Umlauf wants to continue wrestling in college and several programs, including the Badgers, have shown interest in him.
"Being a mat rat, being on that mat, 24/7, open mats in the fall and just putting the time in and when you put the time in this sport, it's going to pay you back," Wausau West wrestling coach Troy Fabry said.
"Being out there on a mat, there's nothing like one on one going out there and knowing that you did everything you could and you get your hand raised at the end," Umlauf said.
"There's nothing like that feeling and doing everything to have that feeling again."
