Steve Jung, head football coach at Wausau East for the last two years, is leaving the Lumberjacks at the end of the school year and will coach Neenah High School in the fall.
The school's activities director, Jim Strick, confirmed the hiring via e-mail on Thursday.
Jung took over a Lumberjack program who was 2-25 for a combined three seasons and turned the program around, leading East to a 4-3 record in the Valley Football Association. He also led the Lumberjacks to Northand WIAA playoff appearances in each of his two seasons with the Lumberjacks.
He was conference coach of the year in his first season in 2011 after East earned wins over Appleton North and D.C. Everest.
Jung graduated from Neenah in 1986. He replaces Kert Dietrich, who resigned after four years as head coach.
"There probably would be no better place for me, than in Wausau. I absolutely love it here, and I can't think of any other place I'd rather be," Jung said.
"Except this unique opportunity came up for me to come back to my home town and to go back and see my friends and my family and to be part of that where I grew up is something special."
“This is a great day for Neenah football,” Neenah athletics director Jim Strick said. “Steve is an experienced head coach in the Valley Football Association and still has strong ties to Neenah. He is a high-energy individual who did a tremendous job in revitalizing Wausau East’s program in just two years.”
