Storm to bring range of impacts on Sunday

Posted:

A dynamic winter storm system is bringing a mix of snow, rain and freezing rain to the region today.

The National Weather Service has a Winter Weather Advisory active for much of Wisconsin on Sunday until midnight.  The advisory includes Marathon, Wood, Portage, Langlade, Lincoln, Vilas, Oneida, Florence, Forest, Shawano, Taylor and Clark Counties.

A Winter Storm Warning will be active for Price, Ashland and Iron Counties until 6 p.m. Sunday.

Earlier on Sunday morning, southeast Wisconsin was under a Freezing Rain Advisory.  That advisory was allowed to expire by the National Weather Service.  The National Weather Service also had a Winter Weather Advisory for Adams, Juneau and Jackson Counties that was allowed to be expired Sunday afternoon.

The storm is forecast to bring the heaviest snow to portions of Minnesota and extreme northwest Wisconsin.  But as warmer air surges into the state from the southwest, the possibility of freezing rain exists as moisture from the storm moves over the state.

With temperatures well above freezing in areas south of Wood and Portage County on Sunday, the afternoon could see locally heavy rainfall.

Accumulating ice and snow is likely across much of Central Wisconsin and motorists should use caution when driving throughout Sunday.  Sidewalks, bridges, overpasses and parking lots will likely become slick.  Ice accumulations are not expected to top .1", but can still make for slippery road conditions.

Current snowfall projections place a 1-2" window across much of Marathon County, with a 2-4" window for areas immediately north.  Meteorologist Rob Duns has a video detailing the snow forecast in the attached video.
