WinterFest brings thousands to downtown Wausau

The sound of ice sculptors at work and horse drawn carriages on the streets, kicked off Saturday's WinterFest events.

Organizers said the event brings thousands of people to downtown Wausau.

But it isn't just about the activities.

Many people heard about the event and decided not to miss it in 2013.

"I actually told the kids, stop and listen, you know what that is, that's the chainsaws on the ice, so they're a little intrigued by that because they've never seen anything like that before," said Melissa Stoffel.

Melissa Stoffel missed last year's WinterFest.

She said it's a great way to celebrate the season.

"I think winter can kind of drag on and I think this is a great opportunity to kind of come out and kind of enjoy what the town has to offer too," said Stoffel.

Organizers said WinterFest is all about giving people something new and different through the winter and the slide proved to be quite the attraction.

"There's not as much going on in the area and for those who don't participate in Badger State Games this just fun, free for the family," said Wausau Area Events Director, Kari Rasmussen.

From a chili cook-off to cookie decorating and art projects, Stoffel said her first experience at WinterFest made an impression and she plans to come back.

"If my work schedule allows," said Stoffel.
