Wausau city leaders are excited about the news Governor Scott Walker has earmarked more $7.4 million dollars for the Medical College of Wisconsin campuses in Wausau and  De Pere.

During a stop in Wausau, Walker explained the money is in  the 2013-15 budget. Walker is set to release his full budget plan next week, which must win legislative approval,  before it can be signed into law.

The Medical School of Wisconsin school announced plans to open a campus in Wausau, back in November.

Wausau Mayor Jim Tipple says he is excited the school is opening here. Tipple says the school does two things, one it addresses the projected physician shortage in rural areas of Wisconsin. Second, he feels it will provide economic development opportunities for the community.

School leaders say they are in negotiations to open classrooms in the Liberty Mutual Insurance building in Wausau.

They hope to open in the fall of 2015.

Area colleges and hospitals will participate in the residency training programs.
