MIAMI (AP) -- Police say an inmate who escaped in Texas apparently stabbed one of his officer escorts with his eyeglasses before running away.

Sgt. Robert Eberling is with the police department in Grapevine, outside Dallas. He says 42-year-old Alberto Morales is believed to have somehow used the glasses to stab the officer, who is in serious but stable condition.

Authorities say Morales has been convicted of violent sexual assaults and was being returned to Nevada to serve a sentence there. He had been convicted of another assault in Miami in December.

Morales had been handcuffed, but it's not clear if he had been cuffed in the front or somehow got out of the handcuffs.

He stabbed the officer in a Walmart parking lot while another officer was inside using the restroom.
