A closer look: Aggravated assaults in Wisconsin


The number of aggravated assaults in Wisconsin dropped by almost 1,000 from 2007 to 2011, according to the Wisconsin Justice Information Center.

In 2011, there were 8,427 reported cases of aggravated assault in the state. That was higher than the 8,275 reported in 2010, but far less than the 9,422 in 2007.

According to the report, hands, fists, and feet were the primary weapons in these aggravated assaults, reported in 46% of the cases in 2011.

Firearms came in next, being used in 17% of the assaults in 2011.

Knives were reported in 12% of the cases. Other unspecified weapons accounted for a quarter of all cases that year.

2011 – 8,427 aggravated assaults

-Knives: 12%

-Other: 25%

2010 – 8,275 aggravated assaults

-Hands, fists, feet: 48%

-Firearms: 22%

-Knives: 10%

-Other: 20%

2009 – 8,458 aggravated assaults

-Hands, fists, feet: 48%

-Firearms: 23%

-Knives: 10%

-Other: 19%

2008 – 9,117 aggravated assaults

-Hands, fists, feet: 47%

-Firearms: 22%

-Knives: 10%

-Other: 21%

2007 – 9,422 aggravated assaults

-Hands, fists, feet: 43%

-Firearms: 24%

-Knives: 11%

-Other: 22%
