WAUSAU (WAOW) - Wausau is hosting the boys and girls State High School Curling Championships. Thirty-four teams have gathered at the newly opened Wausau Curling Center for the two-day event.
In the past, the event has taken place at different curling facilities across the state. Wausau is now the permanent host of the high school championships. Wausau East Coach Mike Maher says the facility is perfect for this event.
"We have 8 sheets of ice, which is double what the other facilities in the state can offer. This allows more teams to be on the ice at the same time," he said.
Wausau West Coach Jim Wedling adds, "Now instead of a three-day championship we can do it in two days. This way students aren't missing as much school and they can still participate in their sport."
