D.C. Everest and Antigo played well into Thursday evening as both teams were deadlocked at 3-3 at the end of regulation.
The boys' ice hockey regional final started at 7PM and didn't end until approximately 10:20PM, when Cole Halligan, Everest senior and captain, was awarded a penalty shot after an Antigo player was called for tripping in the final minute of the third overtime.
Halligan also scored the game-tying goal at the end of regulation, also on a penalty shot.
"Well, shootouts are always, its always stressful and it's always a big deal," Halligan said. "But then you add in playoffs and your whole season's on the line and I didn't wanna let my guys down. They worked too hard for it."
The two teams played a total of 91 minutes, almost the equivalent of two regulation games.
"The guys worked hard all night long, you know to battle," DC Everest head coach Dan Van Slyke and to come away with a victory is huge for us and for our program and for our senior especially."
D.C. Everest will face Wausau West in the sectional semifinals on Tuesday night at Marathon County Park.
