UPDATE

ELDERON (WAOW) - The Marathon County Sheriff's Department says the car carrying two women killed in a crash near Elderon did not stop at a stop sign.

Lt. Dale Wisnewski says Nichole Merckes, 32, of Bowler, and Lillian Long Tail, 75, of Eland, died in the crash with a semi-truck Thursday at the intersection of state Highway 49 and Elm Road.

Wisnewski says investigators are trying to determine whether Merckes drove through the stop sign or whether she tried to stop and couldn't because of speed and slippery conditions.

The driver of the semi-truck was not hurt.

Neither woman was wearing a seat belt, Wisnewski says.
