A former Thorp High School coach made his first court appearance Thursday on charges accusing him of having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl on his track team.
Scott Bergman, 43, appeared with his attorney in Clark County Circuit Court and waived his right to a timely preliminary hearing, according to court records. A status conference was scheduled for Tuesday.
Bergman is charged with felony sexual assault of a student by school staff and two misdemeanor counts of having sex with a child age 16 or older, according to court records.
Bergman was an assistant track coach at Thorp High before being told in December that his contract would not be renewed.
Bergman volunteered with the boys and girls track teams for five years before being hired as a paid assistant three years ago, Superintendent James Montgomery said. He was not a teacher in the school.
According to court records, investigators found nude and partially nude pictures of the student on Bergman's cell phone and he expressed love for the girl in text messages.
When questioned, Bergman told investigators he sent messages all the time because he loved all the girls on the track team, court records said.
Investigators say the girl's diary described sexual encounters with Bergman. The diary and text messages also indicated they were discussing marriage, court records said.
