Basketball star overcomes tragedy

ANTIGO (WAOW) - Antigo senior, Mac Oreskovic is a star on the Red Robins basketball team. As he tries to lead his team through the postseason this year he's having to cope with trade. Oreskovic has spent his life being raised by his single mother, Carrie. He says she was the most important person to him, "She's been my role model and I've always looked up to her for taking care of me and my brother since I was five."

The leading scorer on Antigo's basketball team was preparing for a home game on January 8th when one phone call drastically changed his life. "I got the call at like 5:30 maybe. I heard she got in an accident and I had an idea. I kind of already knew. When we got to the hospital it wasn't a surprise to me at all."

Carrie Oreskovic's SUV collided head on with semi.  She was pronounced dead at the hospital.  He says it didn't feel real, "It was a very surreal feeling. It was kind of hard to believe. It kind of felt like she was just gone on vacation."

Mac responded in a way no one could have imagined. That Friday night, just three days after the loss of his Mother, he played in the Red Robins biggest game of the season.  "I knew that if it was up to my Mom, she'd have me playing right away so I kind of just took that and used that as a way to play."

Antigo downed conference rival Medford that night, behind a game high 24 points from Mac.  "It was very emotional. My point guard, Cassius, came up to me and hugged me and it was the biggest hug I've ever gotten. We were both crying and it was just amazing."

Mac has continued to excel on the court this season, with the memory of his Mom fueling his passion.
