Small brew pub sees success in Rosholt

ROSHOLT (WAOW) -

Kozy Yak Brew Pub in Rosholt is filled with fun, laughter, and of course a lot of beer.

"It's unique for Rosholt," Scott Johnson of Rosholt said.

"Who ever thought there would be a brewery in Rosholt?" Kozy Yak Brew Pub Owner Richard Kosiec said.

Kosiec opened the place in august of last year. He says he's always had a passion for beer. "Wisconsin is beer."

But Kosiec says this brew pub has a different feel.

"We don't have music in this place, we don't have a TV, when you come here, it's a conversation," Kosiec told Newsline 9.

And as the conversations and drinks flow, patrons say strangers become friends.

"It's almost a community gathering place," Kosiec said.

All of the beers on tap are made right here—from the fermenting, to the bottling and kegging. Kosiec even grows some of his own hops, which make the beer bitter. But some of those creations are only available for a short time.

"A beer came out last week, a coffee stout that sounded fantastic, but it was gone right away," Johnson said.

"By having a new beer that's out every week or two weeks, it brings the people back to try it," Kosiec said.

Those customers do come back, but owners say they get their fair share of new customers as well.

"About 25 percent of our customers on any given day are new," Kosiec said.

But how does a small brew pub compete in Central Wisconsin? Kosiec says it's friendlier than you may think. "It's a nice relationship between the breweries, especially the ones in Portage County," Kosiec said.

Kosiec says he hopes the future is filled with more brews and bigger opportunities.

Right now, the brewery is only open Friday through Sunday.
