UPDATE: Superintendent talks about Merrill School Board controversy

MERRILL (WAOW) -

Merrill School District leaders are talking about the controversy surrounding the school board president.

Merrill School Board President Lin Kautza is under fire because of an email sent from her account the day after advancing in the primary election.

Interim Superintendent Don Stevens told Newsline 9 Monday that he's taking the situation very seriously.

"Immediately, I recognized that this could be a concern. There's no question about that," Stevens said.

The email was sent from Kautza's account last week to the superintendent's secretary, asking her to send it out to all of the Merrill School District's staff. The email was forwarded.

It thanked supporters for voting for Kautza in the primary election and asked them to also support her in the April election.

It also named three other candidates, Jeff, John and Chuck, and asked staff members to back them as well.

"The only person that can really talk about those perceptions personally is the person that drafted the email," Stevens said. "Lin is out of the country."

The superintendent said he did not speak with Kautza after he saw the email. Neither did board member Chuck Bolder who is mentioned in it.

"I think they have their right to respond in person, rather than long distance," he said.

Bolder also said the situation is troubling to the board and members want to know why the email was sent.

"I probably would not have sent that email but she did and she must have had a reason for it."

District leaders said they've discussed the situation with their legal counsel and plan to put the issue on the agenda for the next school board meeting when President Kautza is expected to be present.

The next board meeting is scheduled for mid-march.

The school board election will be held on April 2nd.

We tried calling Lin Kautza for comment, but she did not answer our calls.
