Man pleads not guilty in murder-for-hire charge

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) - A Wood County man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges accusing him of trying to hire someone to kill his deceased girlfriend's boyfriend.

A judge ruled prosecutors presented enough evidence during a preliminary hearing for Gabriel Campos, 21, to stand trial on solicitation of first-degree intentional homicide. Prosecutors say Campos was in the Wood County Jail when he tried to hire the hitman.

A witness testified that Campos offered another inmate $4,600, a rifle and a car to kill the man his girlfriend had dated.

 A prosecutor says the next step in the case is a pretrial conference May 29.

In a separate prosecution, Campos pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect to first-degree intentional homicide in 18-year-old Maisie McCullough's death last fall. Her body was found in the bathtub of the home the couple once shared. She had been stabbed in the back and her throat was cut.

The couple had a 2-year-old son.

Campos remains in jail on $5 million bond. His trial in McCullough's death starts June 24.
