UPDATE: 16 people taken to hospital after bus crash


An Oneida County crash involving a school bus and a pickup truck sent several people to the hospital.

A spokesman from Ministry Sacred Heart Hospital in Tomahawk tells us that 16 people were taken there, including 15 from the bus and the driver of the pickup truck. 

The hospital spokesman says seven additional staff members were called in to work, and 22 extra were there to help with the situation.

Sacred Heart Hospital officials tell us the driver of the pickup truck was a 64 year old man. He was airlifted to Ministry St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield. According to State Patrol officials, he suffers non-life threatening injuries. As of Wednesday, he does remain in the hospital in stable condition.

A ten year old boy did suffer minor injuries in the crash. Officials say he has since been treated and released.

A State Patrol lieutenant tells Newsline 9 all the children were brought to the hospital as a precaution. The hospital served as a central meeting place so the students could be picked up by their parents or guardians.

Authorities say the bus had 15 students inside from 4K to 8th grade. They say the bus was taking the children home from school.

Names of the victims have not yet been released.

The crash happened near Rhinelander about 4:00 p.m. Tuesday. According to Wisconsin State Patrol, a school bus transporting 15 students hit a pickup truck that was pulling out of a driveway on Lake Nokomis Road near Spillman Road.

Investigators are still looking into this crash.
