Auburndale students donate a ton of pet food

Students at Auburndale High School made a big delivery Tuesday. They raised $1,000 to help donate more than 3,000 pounds of food for pets at the South Wood County Humane Society in Wisconsin Rapids.

FFA member Vanessa Kieffer came up with the idea for the fundraiser.

"Since these animals don't have a home, and this is a nonprofit business, I just figured might as well bring in some food," said Kieffer.

Kieffer said she was overwhelmed by the amount of food the students donated.

South Wood County Humane Society Director Bridget Chariton said community support is necessary, and the food donation will be put to good use.

"We are a nonprofit organization. So, we rely on donations. All of the supplies we receive on a daily basis helps us care for the animals," said Chariton.

Humane Society leader said dogs at the shelter eat about 150 pounds of food each day, and those expenses add up quickly.

"If we had to go out and buy those supplies, we would be faced with a huge budget, and we would not be able to care for the amount of animals that we do," said Chariton.

Auburndale students said they're happy to help make sure the humane society has enough food to provide for as many animals as possible.

"It's like the students were acting as their guardian angels," said Kieffer.
