Marathon Co. board to study humane society funding woes

A special task force has been created to try and create a new funding plan for the Humane Society of Marathon County.

Earlier this month, Humane Society leaders told the Marathon County Board they need more than $100,000 to keep operating. But county board members still have a lot of questions about costs as well as their legal obligations to the humane society.

Still, the board promises the center will keep running while they figure things out.

"We'll see that they stay open," said Gary Wyman, Marathon County Board chair. "They're going to take care of the old contract that we're operating under right now until we can negotiate a new one and make sure that the board is comfortable with what we're providing is justified by spending taxpayer money."

Linda Berna-Karger, humane society board president, told Newsline 9 she's optimistic the society and the county board can come to some agreement for funding.
