WAUSAU (WAOW) -
Marathon County leaders have put a plan to remodel the courthouse on hold.
The plan discussed Tuesday afternoon would remodel the Marathon County courthouse and jail. The cost was estimated around $72 million.
Board members say a renovation will be needed, but they're not in a rush to decide on a plan until it will meet all the county's needs.
"This is a project that could run anywhere from $70 to more than $80 million by the time it's all added together," said board member Jim Rosenberg. "We don't expect to do it all at one time like that, and it's a phased approach. But still, it's a lot of money, and people want to make sure they're doing the right thing."
"I believe we will adopt an approach but it is a long-term commitment by the county," added board member Kenneth Day.
The issue will now head back to a smaller committee that will look into rebuilding on the current site or building a new facility somewhere else.
