WOOD COUNTY (WAOW) - Auburndale School Superintendent Gerald Eichman says 44 percent of the students were absent from classes Thursday following reports of a gun threat.
The Wood County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday a threat that a student may bring a gun to the high school was proven to be unfounded.
Still, school officials gave parents the option of keeping their children at home Thursday without being counted absent.
According to Eichman, 255 elementary students, or 55 percent, were absent and 140 high school students, or 32 percent, were absent.
Eichman said that on a typical school day in winter, about 5 percent of the school district's nearly 900 students are absent.
Eichman said he would have closed school Thursday if he felt it was unsafe.
"We want to put the parents in the driver's seat when it comes to making these decisions," he said. "Parents want more control in these decisions."
One year later, Bob Look - Dianne's husband, and Scott Sann - Sara'shusband, remember every detail of the tragic day.
