Man opens fire with assault weapon in Milwaukee

MILWAUKEE (AP) -

A gunman opened fire with an assault weapon on a group of people in Milwaukee, a day after the city's police chief testified on Capitol Hill in support of an assault weapons ban.

The shootings happened just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday on a street on Milwaukee's north side. That led to a police chase that ended when the suspect fled from his vehicle and was run down by a police dog.

Milwaukee Police Chief Ed Flynn says two people were wounded in the shooting. Flynn told a news conference near the shooting scene that a man and a woman struck by gunfire were taken to a hospital.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Flynn says the suspect also was taken to a hospital to be treated for dog bite wounds.
