RHINELANDER (WAOW) - The Oneida County Sheriff's Department says a moose was killed when a car smashed into it in rural Rhinelander.
The crash happened about 7:30 p.m. Thursday about eight miles east of Rhinelander on state Highway 45, Lt. Lloyd Gauthier said.
The driver of the car, 50-year-old Paula Eades of Rhinelander, was not hurt.
"There really wasn't time to think. It was just there," she said Friday. "It was scary. It is much bigger than a deer."
Gauthier said the moose, a 600-pound female, slid onto the car during the crash, smashing the windshield and the top of the car.
Gauthier said the last time an accident involving a moose was investigated in Oneida County was about five years ago.
Eades said she knew moose roamed in the area because she saw one maybe 15 years ago crossing a road.
She was able to slow down enough to avoid crashing into that one, she said.
