
Seniors Liz Althoff and Sam Barber both posted double-doubles in Friday's matchup with Concordia-Moorhead to give the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team a 72-64 win in the First Round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Althoff started the scoring, draining a three-pointer just over a minute into the game. The Pointers led for all but a minute of the first half, but never taking more than a six point edge, earning a 25-22 lead at halftime.
The Pointers went on a run midway through the second half building its largest lead, eight points, as Barber rolled in a layup to give UWSP the 40-32 lead. The Cobbers then went on a 10-2 run coming out of a timeout to knot the game at 42-42.
The two teams went back-and-forth until Brooke Allen drained a 3-pointer with just over two minutes to play, giving UWSP the five-point advantage and never looked back, knocking down crutial free throws down the stretch.
Althoff led all scorers, posting a career-high 28 points, shooting 15-17 from the charity stripe. The senior guard also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds to post her first career double-double.
Barber tallied 25 points on the evening, shooting 11-for-19 from the field, and grabbed 10 rebounds.
Tricia Sorenson led the Cobbers with 17 points.
UWSP (25-5) will face Simpson College (26-2) at 7 p.m. tomorrow evening in Indianola, Iowa for the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
