Hayward, Eau Claire Memorial win state hockey titles

BOYS CHAMPIONSHIP - Eau Claire Memorial 6, Verona Area 1

Eau Claire Memorial defeated Verona 6-1 Saturday to win its second State championship.

In the first period, Verona scored first at 14:35 with a goal by Zach Jones, but the score was quickly followed by a shot in the net by Eau Claire's Brady Bollinger at 15:00  to tie the game at 1-1.

With the score tied at 1-1 to start the second period, Dylan Ross fired one in the net at 1:24 for Eau Claire, and the second Eau Claire goal of the period was a Jacob Bresser short-handed score at 14:59.

Bresser continued his scoring prowess with a power-play goal in the 10:15 of third period.  Charley Grasskamp gave Eau Claire their fifth goal at 7:49, and  Austin Pippen notched his name in the scoring books fwith a goal at 10:36 to complete the scoring.

Alex Geving had 26 saves for Eau Claire and saves for Alex Jones collected 24 stops for Verona.

GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP - Hayward Co-op 5, Onalaska Co-op 2

The 12th WIAA Girls State Hockey Championship game between is in the record books and the Hayward Co-op  is the State champion with a 5-2 win over the Onalaska Co-op Saturday,

After one period of play, Hayward led 2-0 thanks to pair of goals by Meredith Ingebretson. In the second period, Holly Turnbull added to Hayward lead with a goal. Another goal by Ingebretson gave her the "hat trick" and extended the Hayward lead to 4-0. Theresa Knutson of Onalaska scored on successive goals, one at 11:56 and again at 16:43 to cut the Hayward lead in half at 4-2.

In the third period of play, the only goal was scored by Hayward's Annika Neerdaels. 

Sarah Miley of Hayward had 21 save, and Jeanalyn Schindler of Onalaska stopped 20n shots. Hayward's first title comes in its third trip to State.
