Boy rescued from Wisconsin River by firefighters

Wausau firefighters rescued a boy who became stranded on the Wisconsin River, near Whitewater Park.

Lt. Ted Tautges said the boy had been at the library and attempted to take a short cut home across the river. "He fell into the water and was able to pull himself to safety on a rock. Then, he started calling for help. A passerby heard him and called 911," said Tautges.

The boy was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries.

Wausau firefighters say this is a situation that could have ended disastrously. "He was very lucky. This time of year, falling through the year can lead to hypothermia very quickly," Tautges said.

With warmer temperatures predicted later in the week, area rivers and lakes are sure to have even more melting ice.
