Outdoors with Lauren: Sled Dog Racing

Willow Springs Garden hosted it's annual last sled dog race of the season for the Midwest. 23 teams participated from Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan. Depending how many dogs were used, the trail was anywhere from a 2-10 mile sprint.
This is not the kind of sport you can casually participate in, mushers say it's a way of life. Brittany Menard says, "Commitment is huge, I mean you have to be committed every day. Everything revolves around the dogs, vacation, training, money invested in is a lot. I know, for me, I haven't slept since yesterday. I worked 3rd shift so I came straight from work, so it's quite a commitment."
For these mushers it's not just about winning but also the joy of racing itself. Menard says she loves the dogs,"The dogs, the love of the sport, adrenaline rush, friends. I've always said, if I was never into dogs, I wouldn't have any friends, but the whole mushing community is a big family."
Even though winter winding down... These mushers say it's ok.. because they still get to enjoy these dogs year round.
