Fiji police probe apparent beatings of 2 prisoners

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) -

Fijian police are investigating what appeared to be the brutal beatings of two recaptured prisoners on a disturbing video seen this week on social media.

The 9-minute video depicts at least eight men beating two handcuffed men. One is lying on the back of a truck while the other is in a field nearby. In the video, the men hit the pair with long clubs and short batons. The victims can be heard wailing while the men laugh or whistle.

The Fiji Police Force said Tuesday it believes the men are recaptured prisoners. Its statement says Fijian security agencies have worked "tirelessly" to protect ordinary citizens from criminal activity but that what is depicted in the video "requires investigation."

The military that leads Fiji has promised democratic elections next year.
