Athlete of the Week: Amherst's Caleb Glennon

The Amherst boys basketball team is getting set to play in its first state tournament since 1998. But for a few members of the Falcons, this isn't their first time playing in Madison.

Caleb Glennon remembers winning a football state championship there last November.

"It's unbelievable, especially with football," Glennon said. "And now making it back to state for basketball, I mean we as a class could certainly do it, but it's better than anything we could have hoped for."

Glennon was a back-up quarterback for the Falcons in the fall and started his first game in the state championship, leading Amherst to its first-ever football state title.

Now, as a basketball player, he's leading his team again, averaging more than 15 points a game.

"You've got to be a special athlete to do what he did, going in playing one game at quarterback in the state final and had the game he had," Falcons' coach Gregg Jensen said. "But he's a young man that's got a strong desire to win. The will to win, he's got a big heart. He's going to give you nothing but 100 percent."

Now the Falcons will play in their first basketball state tournament for the first time in 15 years. And football championship aside, winning this weekend would be the real prize for Glennon.

"Our class, we've always been pretty talented. Football had always been a goal for some of us," Glennon said. "But us basketball players who have been playing since 5th grade together, it's always been a goal. I'm just looking forward to the experience. It's going to be awesome."
