WAUSAU (WAOW) - Wausau police say an alert neighbor helped investigators track down a burglar who broke into a home twice in recent weeks and stole nearly 20 guns.
Detective Lt. Craig Dunbar said a 23-year-old man was arrested in two burglaries at a South 10th Avenue home.
The man broke in twice, most recently early Monday morning, and took 19 guns, mostly rifles and shotguns, Dunbar said. Some of the guns stolen from the 52-year-old man's home were given to him by his father and were "pretty valuable," Dunbar said.
Police got a break in the case because a neighbor noticed a suspicious car during the second break-in and snapped a picture of it with her cell phone, the detective said.
Dunbar said 14 of the stolen guns have been recovered from local gun shops or pawn stores.
Dunbar said it is not unusual for thieves to go after the same victim more than once. "They see an easy target. Why not? Nobody is home and they go back."
