Newman Catholic looks for 4th straight trip to state

Tickets to the Resch Center will be punched tomorrow in sectional final action.

The Newman Catholic girls' basketball team will play Hilbert in the Division 5 sectional final.

The Fighting Cardinals are playing for their fourth straight trip to state after beating Phelps Thursday night by 18 points.

"When you get to the sectional finals, that's a big game for everybody. Everybody has the same goal at that point. Everybody is hungry so you've got to come ready to play," Newman head coach Tom Weinkauf said.

"You know that the opponent is going to be ready to play so you've got to be ready to play. I've really got to hand it to them. Talk about quit. There was no quitting them. They just kept working and I'm so proud of them to be where we are."

Newman Catholic isn't the only school trying to win a trip to Green Bay. Undefeated Neillsville will take on Ladysmith in Division 3. Nekoosa will face Lodi after winning their first regional title in 31 years last weekend and are on the verge of making their first ever appearance at state.

Colby is also one win away from making that same kind of history while Owen-Withee is trying to get to the final four for the second straight year.

Top-seed Assumption is competing in their first sectional final in five seasons and will play Seneca.
