The quality and quantity of water is a primary concern of those opposed to a 7,000-acre dairy farm in the Wood County community of Saratoga.
About 350 people filled the Saratoga Town Hall Sunday to get an update on water testing. County extension agent Peter Manley told the crowd the water quality in Saratoga is above most communities. Manley says none of 79 water samples tested above the recommended level of nitrogen.
The Golden Sands Dairy plans to dig its own high-capacity wells for the farm and its 5,300 animals. Resident Rick Potter tells the Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune that he's concerned the high-capacity wells will cause his 15-foot-deep well to dry up.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources plans to hold a public hearing on the well permits.
