Newman Catholic High School students and staff watch selection of Pope Francis

Students and staff at Newman Catholic High School in Wausau watched the events unfolding in Rome leading up to the selection of the new pope.

Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was selected Wednesday as the new pope.

With the start of the conclave on Tuesday, religious education teacher Joy Orozco said students and staff prayed for the cardinals taking part in the selection process.

"So they are open and generous and happy with the guidance from the Holy Spirit," said Orozco.

Students we talked with say they hope the new pope is a good spiritual leader who develops their faith and shows the universal nature of the church.
