Marieke Penterman is basking in the glory of being a champion cheesemaker.
"The whole night I've thought about it, but I really can't find any words yet. So, it's beyond belief," Penterman said.
Marieke's Mature Gouda took home the top award at the 2013 U.S. Championship Cheese Contest in Green Bay Wednesday.
Penterman says being a contestant can be a little nerve-wracking.
"When your wheel comes up, and it's sitting there on the table with two judges above it, you're always a little nervous," Penterman said.
Penterman and her husband, who are natives of Holland, opened Holland's Family Cheese in 2006. Since then, the company has brought home more than 60 awards. Penterman says she knows why.
"In Holland, we are called cheeseheads. I think that's the reason why we are feeling so home here in Wisconsin because Wisconsinites are cheeseheads," Penterman said.
But Penterman says she can't do it alone. She says it takes the talents of the workers at Holland's Family Cheese, too.
"We have a great team, and just because of the team, everybody puts their own dedication in it and makes sure the product is what it is," Penterman said.
Since winning the contest, orders for Marieke's Mature Gouda have been pouring in.
"This is better than any advertising you can hope for, and it has a huge impact," Penterman said.
Penterman says she's excited for more people to try her award-winning Gouda.
Chance of a shower or T-storm Sunday, otherwise the weekend forecast is looking good.
