Facing a budget shortfall, the Marathon County Humane Society has gotten some help to remain open.

Humane Society leaders had been dipping into reserves to cover shortfalls last year and worried they'd face the same issue this year.

But now, they said they've gotten more than $127,000 from Marathon County. The money came from dog licensing fees.

Directors said it couldn't have come at a better time.

"Right now we can breathe a little bit, we can do the sheltering that we do, bring in the strays from all over, hold them, provide the vaccinations and the care that we do, just continue to do what we're doing while decisions are made for the future," said Humane Society Director, Mary Kirlin.

Earlier this year, the Humane Society asked for $168,000 and said it needed the money to stay open.

Humane Society directors said the money from the county will help with the current year.

But, they said they're also working with the county government on a more permanent plan to pay for stray animals in the future.
