Marathon County sheriff addresses retirement

Marathon County Sheriff Randy Hoenisch has not yet resigned from his position as the county's top law enforcement officer. Governor Scott Walker's office confirmed Friday that they have not received official notification from Sheriff Hoenisch and therefore cannot begin to accept applications for the position.

Hoenisch announced last month that he would be retiring. The 57-year-old sheriff has been under scrutiny recently for staying quiet about his wife's legal troubles as well as for recently revealed records that showed he has spent less than two hours in the office this year.

On Friday, Sheriff Hoenisch released a statement saying, "The Wisconsin Retirement System was contacted earlier this month, and I am awaiting documentation necessary to complete the retirement process. Until the packet arrives and I know what the retirement date will be, I cannot notify the governor with a specific date of retirement."

Right now, county leaders confirm that Sheriff Hoenisch is still collecting his regular paycheck and will do so until his retirement is official.
