Adams County man charged with shooting girlfriend

Posted:
ADAMS COUNTY (WAOW) -

The man Adams County authorities say shot and killed his girlfriend has now been charged.

Coleman Dybul, 28, is facing a first degree reckless homicide charge. He's also facing other drug related charges, according to court documents.

On March 2, the Adams County Sheriff's Department says Dybul shot his girlfriend, Toni Voss, with a shotgun in the middle of the night.

Authorities say Dybul told them he was sleeping, when he was startled. They say Dybul said he thought Voss was being attacked, and shot her with a gun he kept by his bed.

Court records show Dybul told officers he had served in the Marines and was diagnosed with PTSD.

Records reveal that Dybul said he thought he had to neutralize his target, just like his training. Those records go on to say "Dybul stated, 'honestly it was like being back in Afghanistan, kill or be killed.'"

According to the state crime lab, opiates were detected in Dybul's lab results.

Dybul is set to appear in court again later this month. He's being held on a $250,000 bond. Court officials say a request for a lesser bond was denied.

If found guilty, Dybul could face more than 60 years behind bars.

Newsline 9 tried to reach Dybul's attorney but our calls were not immediately returned.

The District Attorney did not want to comment on the case.
