Central Wisconsin has a state champion in girls basketball after Assumption held off Barneveld's comeback in the fourth quarter, winning by a score of 39-35.
When the Golden Eagles tied the game in the final minutes of the Division 5 championship, the Royals looked to their one senior,Hannah Skibba, for leadership.
"I' ma senior, they're my girls, I know that I have to take care of them so that's something that I focused on. I didn't want to be the reason that we didn't get it done," Skibba said.
"I just told them, we're going to be okay. We're going to get this done and we're going to get this done together."
Royals head coach Joe Birkhauser said that her leadership has been present all season long.
"When they look back, you're going to look back and say what great leadership they had this year," Birkhauser said. "Hannah stepped up in all facets."
But for scoring, Assumption found freshman Gena Grundhoffer, who scored six of the Royals final eight points of the game while the team's usual go-to scorer, junior Mary Sigler, fouled out with 3:13 left.
"It 'shard to stay on the bench, especially in a big arena like this one where I'm not necessarily used to it," Sigler said.
"But I just had to rely on my teammates, because we're a team, we're a family, and they stepped up, especially from a young freshman, who just took it to the whole, made her free throws."
Grundhoffer was a perfect 8-for-8 at the charity stripe, making her free throws when it counted the most.
I was so nervous, if I made a mistake, I probably would have started crying on thee court because all these emotions that were going through me," Grundhoffer said. "But we came out, and we wanted it. And it's just awesome."We know
what type of player she's going to be and what type of player she is," Birkhauser added. When a freshman stands up there and makes free throws like she did. I mean that's pretty big time."
The Royals win their first ever WIAA state title, after last winning a state championship in the Wisconsin Independent School Athletic Association era in 1998.
Assumption also makes history by winning the very first championship game held at the Resch Center.
