MADISON (WAOW) - Rebecca Blank, the acting U.S. secretary of commerce, is the choice to become the next chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
UW System President Kevin Reilly and a Board of Regents committee announced the recommendation Monday. The full Board of Regents is to take up the matter April 5.
Blank has been with the U.S. Department of Commerce since 2009.
From 1999-2008, Blank was dean of the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, where she also worked as a professor of public policy and economics. Before Michigan, she was on the faculty at Northwestern University and served as a member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors from 1997-99.
"I am honored and delighted to be offered the job of chancellor at UW-Madison. This is a world-class school," Blank said in a statement Monday.
Gov. Scott Walker called Blank a great pick for the job. "She has excellent academic credentials and strong leadership experience. Equally as important, she has a keen knowledge of economic issues that can help the UW promote great prosperity in the state," the governor said in a statement.
Blank holds a doctorate degree in economics from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an undergraduate degree from the University of Minnesota.
In a statement Monday, President Barack Obama praised Blank as a steady leader during four years in the Commerce Department and a "tireless advocate for American businesses."
"I will be sad to see her go this summer," the president said.
