Across the nation many people are filling out their NCAA tournament brackets. For those who put down $10 or $20 in an office pool, it may be fun, but it is also illegal.

Everest Metro Police Captain, Clayton Schulz reminds you, "Office pools are illegal. I know we don't get many complaints  about them. I know if the dollar amounts were a lot higher, then we might."

Marathon County District Attorney Ken Heimerman adds, "The DA's office doesn't pursue investigations. We get referrals from police agencies and the bracket complaints are not something we get a lot of ever, actually."

They may not get many complaints but state law makes does make it illegal.

There are varying penalties on the books, but anyone who takes part and bets could face a misdemeanor anyone running the pool could face a felony.

Gambling experts add that this time of year is particularly difficult for those with gambling addictions. For resources on how you can get help hotlines are available at Gamblers Anonymous 888-844-2891 or 1-800-GAMBLE-5.
