Rural Wausau family escapes home fire

Posted:

WAUSAU (WAOW) - The Marathon County Sheriff's Department says a mother awoke to popping sounds early Tuesday, went outside her rural Wausau home, saw flames on the roof by the chimney and rushed back inside to rescue her son and a pet dog.

Lt. Dale Wisnewski says the home in the Town of Elderon was destroyed in the fire and no one was hurt.

The fire was reported about 2 a.m.

Wisnewski says that after getting out of the home and seeking help, the family waited in a driveway for firefighters to arrive.

Investigators said the fire started in the home's chimney.
