Pair plans to open Marshfield bakery

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -

Sara Riedel and Mary Stendel have been best friends since fourth grade.

"We just stick together through thick and thin," Riedel said.

It's safe to say they make a great team, and it was clear last weekend when the duo won a baking contest in Marshfield.

"I was pretty much speechless, and that's quite a feat, to get me speechless," Stendel said.

The Baker Battles were held by Main Street Marshfield, a nonprofit dedicated to revitalizing the city's downtown. The winners received $500 and will get a grant if they open a bakery within the next year.

"Now, we feel a lot more secure in the sense that we have the city behind us. This is something that they wanted. We know they're willing to help us out," Riedel said.

Leaders at Main Street Marshfield say the city has needed a bakery for years, and there was no shortage of competitors in their Baker Battles.

"We did not know how many competitors to even expect. We had no idea, and when we got seven, we were quite amazed," said Denise Sonnemann, executive director of Main Street Marshfield.

Judges say the way the pair worked together set them apart from the competition.

"She likes doing the baking, and I like doing the decorating," Riedel said.

The friends say they've had plans to open a bakery together for a while, and winning the competition is just the spark they needed to get going.

"It definitely is giving us an extra push. It's just exciting to do something that we really love," Stendel said.

The pair says they still have decisions to make, including a name for their bakery, but they hope to have it open sometime this fall.
