Antigo Fire Officials ask for State Fire Marshal's help in investigation
ANTIGO (WAOW) -
Ice coats stoplights and utility poles just across the street from what used to be Peep's Pawn Shop in Antigo. The now demolished business suffered one fire Tuesday morning and yet another Wednesday afternoon.
"What I saw was a lot of smoke," said John Morse.
"They had the pumper trucks with the crane, and they were spraying down into the building," said Burrito Loco Manager, Shawna Moseman.
People in the area said they still can't believe it, as they look at what's left.
"It was really scary, you know, you have to feel really bad for the business owners," said Moseman.
Antigo's Fire Chief said the department is still trying to figure out what caused both fires. He said firefighters thought they had the first fire fully extinguished.
"We're trying to put all of the pieces of the puzzle together, we're trying to work with the State of Wisconsin's Fire Marshal's office to see if we can get some assistance from their office," said Antigo Fire Chief, Jon Petroskey.
To help put the pieces together, he said they're also getting help from people who saw it happen.
"People with new technology and phones and stuff to see different layers of smoke layers that comes through, cause that tells us a lot in the investigation part of it," said Petroskey.
As the business owners sift through the rubble to salvage what's left, surrounding businesses are also dealing with the damage left behind.
"We're dealing with smoke and all of our hardware is out of the building," said Wisconsin Seed Potato Certification Program Director, Alex Crockford.
Crockford's office sits just two spots down from where the fire happened.
"We ended up throwing a lot of stuff on chairs, rollers on them, and we just wheeled whole chairs out of the office," said Crockford.
Now, Clockford said they're looking for a temporary place to operate.
"We're not setting back up to do things until we know we're going to be safe," said Crockford.
